Camp Lazlo Pre Production

As I was searching for my art supplies I came across a few of my painted sketches and BGs from the Camp Lazlo Pilot.
I usually start with rough gouache sketches, then transfer to either Photoshop or Illustrator.

Lumpus Cabin

Lumpus Cabin, originally uploaded by carol-wyatt.
My inspiration behind the designs on Camp Lazlo were vintage fabrics from the 40s and 50s. The colors were graphic and bold with areas where the white of the fabric peeked through the paint. Almost like a dry brush effect, but more graphic.
I loved the yellow skies in the old Western prints and added that to the Lazlo environment.

Camp Lazlo Development

Jelly Cabin
This was one of my favorite paintings that I did for Joe Murray when we were working on the development for Camp Lazlo. He told me to do whatever I wanted with his sketches. Joe and I were big fans and collectors of kitsch 50s furniture and fabrics. I picked up some great 50s fabric on our travels and decided to design the look around those patterns. The colors and graphics were very simple and beautiful. I thought a yellow sky would be great with the comical nature of the show, and give the backgrounds the look of vignettes similar to 50s graphics.

This was one of the BGs of Lumpus' cabin used for the pilot.
